Chile Rellenos!

Brian and Chelsea did a post about their Chile Rellenos adventure.  It made me realize that we never have made real chile rellenos.  We've made chile relleno casserole lots of times.  It is quick, easy and delicious!

The dad and I went on a walk the other day over to see Ruth and Joe Danoff.  Ruth planted green chile in her garden, but Joe doesn't eat it, and she said it's not worth fixing for just herself, so she had us pick all the rest of her chile and bring it home.  We decided that since Brian's and Chelsea's looked so good, that we would fix real chile rellenos for breakfast.  Here is our adventure in pictures:

We got up early this morning and started roasting the chiles.  Dad put them on the grill, and then he got out his weed-burner and gave them a good blistering!

We planted two poblano plants this year, and got a grand total of one poblano.  We decided to make a relleno out of it, as well.  (We all split it.)  We decided that the green chiles were definitely more tasty than the poblano.

Chile rellenos are a lot of work, and a lot of mess.  We figured that since we were going to make that big of a mess, and make that many dishes, we might as well make a boat load of them.  A boat load doesn't make any bigger mess than six of them.

They were actually some of the best rellenos we've ever tasted.  They were absolutely delicious!

When we first moved here to Gallup, there was a burrito lady named Chela who brought burritos around to the downtown offices every day.  On Fridays, she had Chile Relleno Burritos.  I was still staying home with my little girls at the time.  Often, on Fridays, he'd pick up a couple of them and bring them home for our lunch.  They were amazingly delicious!  Since we made a jillion rellenos, we decided to make the extras into chile relleno burritos for the freezer. That way, we can grab one from the freezer and stick it in the old lunch bag for lunch.  We hope that they're as good as Chela's.  We made 39 of them!

This has nothing to do with chile rellenos.  It's just a picture of the kabochas growing up along the fence.  You can't really see it, but they are hanging in a cute little arrangement all along the fence.  The whole look reminds me of the Christmas decorations in picture frames that Angela helped us with last Thanksgiving.
